When a Child Struggles with Anger

When Big Emotions Turn Into Aggression

Some children experience emotions that feel bigger than their ability to control them.

For many children with autism or developmental differences, frustration can quickly turn into aggression.

They may hit, kick, scream, or lash out—not because they are bad children, but because their nervous system is overwhelmed.

The Bible reminds us:

“Human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
— James 1:20

But Scripture also reminds us that God is patient with us when we struggle.

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.”
— Psalm 145:8

If God shows patience toward us, we can ask Him to help us show patience toward our children.

What Parents Should Remember

When a child becomes aggressive:

• They may be overstimulated
• They may not have the words to express frustration
• Their brain may struggle with emotional regulation

Aggression is often a signal, not the root problem.

Children with exceptionalities often need:

  • calm environments
  • clear routines
  • emotional coaching
  • behavioral support
  • and lots of grace.

Biblical Wisdom on Anger

The Bible speaks often about managing anger.

“Better a patient person than a warrior.”
— Proverbs 16:32

“A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict.”
— Proverbs 15:18

These verses remind us that learning patience and emotional control is a journey, even for adults.

For children, it is something they must be taught and guided through.

Prayer for Parents

Lord,

You see the parents raising children with extraordinary needs.

Give them strength when they feel overwhelmed.

Give them wisdom to respond with patience instead of fear.

Surround their homes with Your peace.

Help their children grow in emotional regulation, understanding, and calm.

Remind these parents that they are not alone.

You walk with them every step of this journey.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Faith Declaration

“I invite God’s peace into my home.
My child is growing in calm, understanding, and self-control.
God gives me patience and wisdom to guide them with love.”

Prayer for a Child Struggling with Aggression

(You can pray this quietly or speak gently over him without touching if he is escalated.)

“Lord Jesus,

You see this child.
You know his heart, his mind, and every struggle he carries.

Your Word says in Psalm 145:8 that You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

Right now, I ask that Your peace cover Levi.

Where there is confusion, bring clarity.
Where there is frustration, bring calm.
Where there is anger, release Your gentleness.

Your Word says in James 1:19–20 that human anger does not produce the righteousness of God.

So I ask, Lord, that the spirit of peace replace every spirit of aggression.

Calm his mind.
Regulate his emotions.
Strengthen his ability to feel safe.

Let Your presence surround him like a shield.

Give wisdom to his parents and caregivers.
Give them patience, understanding, and support.

And Lord, let this child grow into the destiny You created for him.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.”
